The Workshop UnderBroen is soon to open

Around the 1st of Maj, the workshop UnderBroen will be opening under Langebro in one of municipality’s old workshops close to Danhostel. It will be a so-called fablab, where one can work with digital products in combination with the digital. Copenhagen Solutions Lab is founding partner.

In the new workshop is will be possible to work with both computers and digital components that for example can be integrated in urban space equipment, and with machines such as 3D printers, lasercutters, and cnc-cutters to make prototypes and models. The hope is that the place on the long run will hold a big wood and metal workshop where you can work with bigger tings e.g. signs, garbage bins, benches, parking meters etc. in a 1:1 scale.

Not a ’members only’ club
It is the non-profit organization Maker, that is behind the place and to begin with will move in with members and equipment. The organization Maker, a union between people all working to promote the digital-physical variant of the do-it-yourself-culture, have received 1 mio. kr. from the Culture and Leisure Committee to get the workshop going and create a festival. Besides CPH Solutions Lab the Workshop UnderBroen is among others working with BLOX, Danish Architecture Center, Danish Design Center, Delta, CIID, Fablab RUC, and Illutron.

Mikkel C. Knudsen Holst, who represents the organization Maker and is working to get the project going, says about the new workplace:
“We are very aware of the workshop not becoming a small closed club. People who are interested in using the workshop can become members and be trained in using the machines. You can also just drop by. We are considering opening a small café and to exhibit digital art under the bridge. Additionally, we will make workshops, courses, debating events and hack-a-tons, that can attract citizens who are not aware of the possibilities. “
